Make Hearty & Amazing Apple Cider With Ordinary Apple Juice
Good news for all backyard brewing enthusiasts, brewing your own fresh apple alcoholic drink or cider is easy using the most available apple sap in your kitchen. Yes, you heard it right, you or anyone can now create your own cider through commercial apple juices that you buy from the supermarkets and groceries.
You don’t have to own a whole orchard of apples to brew hard apple drink or cider. Fresh apple that contains no preservatives serves as good substitute for newly squeezed apple extract. Don’t worry if you only have pasteurized apple extract. You just have to strain it before using to eliminate the yeasts from the sap to obtain better alcohol level of your apple extract.
These are the easy steps in making 5 gals. (Gallons) of dry apple alcoholic drink or cider which is slowly fermented:
1. Buy five gallons of apple juices. However, if you cannot find one 5-gallon of apple juice at the groceries so you just buy several tins of it and then just bring them together later on.
2. Put all the juices inside a fermentation level to prepare it for its first phase of fermentation.
3. Put adequate quantities of white wine yeast. You are also allowed to put dry yeast or you just prepare it first to initiate fermentation by abiding the directions given on its label. You don’t have to use campden tablets to purify the juice especially if you are using the pasteurized kind of apple juice.
4. Wait for few weeks to begin the actual fermentation.
5. Remove the fermented cider from the first container and put it in another fermentation container for its second phase of brewing. Make sure that the container is air tight.
6. Always store the brewing vessel inside a cool and dry place and allow the apple juices to continue with the fermentation process. You would observe that the fermentation process is completed when bubbles don’t appear anymore.
7. Put the fermented apple cider in another container or flask it for one month.
8. Allow the fermented apple cider to age or mature for at least six months or up to 1 year.
You would probably think that this is not the most efficient way to make your own apple alcoholic drink or cider. However, if you let other people taste your product, they will definitely like it. It will taste even better if you allow the fermented apple cider to age.
There’s nothing wrong with undergoing several testing and taste tests for your hard apple drink or cider because it will help you achieve the right taste after quite some time, just like what happened to the famous Boone’s Farm Wine.
It’s possible to produce clear hard apple drink or cider without using any clearing agent. Just allow the fermented cider inside the storage room for one month allowing the unwanted sap residues to stay at the bottom of your container.
Just follow these simple and practical procedures and you’ll definitely achieve great tasting home-brewed apple alcoholic drink or cider.
How To Make The Perfect Apple Pie Crust
No American can resist the tasty charm of an apple pie. There have been thousands of variations to this all-time favorite food of almost all Americans.
Each recipe has a distinct taste and appeal. Since everyone has his own discriminating taste, many people prefer the old-fashioned recipe of chunky apple filling inside a crumbly crust. Meanwhile, others want the fusion of apple and other sweet fruits, a different kind of crust, various toppings or garnishing including nuts and cheese.
You can easily make an apple pastry especially if you have all the proper ingredients coupled with proper baking know-how. A good tasting pastry or pie starts with fresh and well-prepared ingredients followed by an evenly baked crust. These two are the most recommended combination in making home cooked apple pastry or pie baked in an old-fashioned way.
Before starting to create your perfectly baked traditional crust, make sure that the ingredients which you will use were kept refrigerated days ago. All the components of your amazing pie base or crust like your flour and milk must be really cold.
It is recommended to use flour the all-purpose kind instead of cake or bread flour because these two are soft and are not appropriate in creating flaky pastry base. If you want a brittle or flaky base with oozing butter flavor, you must use 50%PRCTG% shortening and 50%PRCTG% butter.
The moisture or the oil coming from these two gives the flaky texture to your apple pastry. You have to cut in shortening and butter either by a spoon, fork or pastry mixer till the mixture or dough appears like peas. If the mixture is dry you may add in water although cold sour cream will produce a flakier or crumblier crust.
If you think that the mixture or dough has achieved its perfect consistency, knead pastry dough or mixture and make one dough ball. You must cover this with clean cloth or plastic cover and put it inside the fridge for about half hour.
Keeping the mixture or dough cool relaxes your mixture and creates a good round shape. After half an hour, you may now get the mixture or dough out of your fridge and put it on a clean table sprinkled with flour.
Get a rolling pin and put flour around it. Start rolling the pin over your mixture but maintain the round shape which must be bigger than the baking pan by two inches in size. After this, wrap the mixture and chill it again for another half hour.
You can now arrange the rolled out dough into your baking pan. Make sure that you cut the sides so your crust looks neat and delicious. Now, your mixture is ready to have its filling.
Make sure that you follow your recipe properly because there some instructions wherein dough has to be baked first or sometimes you have to create little holes below to let the steam get away. Whatever apple pastry or pie recipe you follow, making an evenly baked crust or base is your means to go for that mouth-watering treat.

10 Tips To Prepare A Great Tasting Apple Pie!
Never be intimidated in baking apple pies. Whether you are an experienced cook or just a novice baker, you could always make great tasting apple pies by just keeping in mind the following tips and tricks.
1. As the name implies, apples remain the main ingredients of any apple pastry recipe. You are fortunate when you own apple orchards because you don’t have any problems getting fresh apples anytime.
But if you live far away from a good source of fresh apples, it is fine to buy them in your nearby supermarkets. Choose the Granny Smith ones because they create a wonderful flavor when blended with sugar & cinnamon.
Other apples that are great for apple pies are the Cortland and McIntosh apples. However, make sure that they are juicy and fresh.
2. Never overcook the base or crust. Baking delicious apple pies is challenging because you might overcook the base or crust and also its sides. However, solving this issue can be done by placing aluminum foil to secure the sides of your pan.
Avoid crumpling the aluminum foil because it reflects heat so it may result to undercooked edges. Another way to avoid this is to avail a side or edge shield from the nearby kitchen store. This side guard is positioned over the sides of your pan while baking.
3. Always taste or try the mixture. Whenever you combine the sugar or cinnamon, take a quick taste of the flavor of your pie mixture. Of course, you don’t wish to bake a bland pie. It will become your biggest failure.
4. If you’re preparing your pastry crust before pouring the filling or the stuffing, your pastry base or crust might blow up. After you have baked your pastry crust, place some dry or dehydrated beans under the base before putting it inside your oven.
In case you don’t have dehydrated beans, baking beads which you buy from supermarkets also serve the same purpose. This part is always critical but perfecting this will certainly result to better tasting and more appealing pies.
5. Having an abundant supply of juicy apples or fruits is always good. Whenever you intend to bake any apple based pastry, buy more than your usual estimate. In making real good pies, make sure to have a large portion of sweet apple filing inside your pie or pastry crust. Then extend the crest or top crust above the mass of sweet apple filing.
As you cook your pastry, you would see that the amount of your prepared apple filing will decrease. Your fresh and juicy apple filing actually reduces when it’s done so make sure to have lots of filling inside the delicious pastry. Otherwise, your pastry will only have some pieces of tasty apple filing.
6. As toppings or garnishing, you are allowed to use a sherbet or frozen fruit desserts and cookies. Just use your creativity. Slice the baked pie neatly then place one scoop of vanilla or pistachio sorbet over a serving and top it with one or two cookies or sprinkle it with chopped nuts or cinnamon powder.
7. Always make variations. Don’t just settle with your usual old-fashioned apple pastry recipe. For more variations, you are encouraged to search for new apple pastry recipes. Furthermore, you are also allowed to develop your own versions out of your traditional apple pie recipe.
8. In serving your baked apple pie, drizzle it with some caramel syrup. In case you don’t have any sorbet or frozen fruits, caramel will work just fine. In fact, caramel will bring more sweetness and flavor to any kind of delicious apple pie.
9. In case your fruits are already sweet and you opt to skip the sugar, add 1 tablespoon of lemon extract, shredded lemon pulp or zest plus two tablespoons of softened apple jam or jelly.
10. Presentation counts. Always do your best to create a great tasting pie along with your nice and appetizing crust. A classic design for a traditional pie base or crust always has slits over its vented crust.
Nevertheless, you are free to put more decorations on your pastry such as cutting out heart shapes from the crest or top shell. Be creative.

How To Prevent Your Apple Slices From Browning
It is surprising to note that there’s a lot of methods on how to stop your sliced up apples from becoming brown. But what is more surprising is the fact that there’s actually only 1 way for you to prevent your apple cuts from becoming brown with using the least effort on your part.
Let us first discuss why these apples are becoming brown.
Try picking a ripe apple fruit off from its tree then you will notice that it will usually last for a couple weeks before eventually rotting then becoming soft. However, those freshly cut and sliced up apples are becoming brown immediately after those chemicals, that are inside the fruit which contains iron, reacts with oxygen from our air.
This is something that all of us encounter everyday, when those iron-based objects becomes rusted or the scabs on your cuts turn brown. This chemical reaction is being referred as “oxidation”, while the particular enzyme which causes oxidation is named “polyphenol oxidase”, or commonly referred to as “tyrosinase”.
Actually, there are so many cells present inside 1 apple fruit, and when you cut the fruit open, these cells gets exposed to oxygen which is present in our air, so it causes the fruit to become brown. A bruised apple fruit has signs of some oxidation already.
When the fruit drops from a tree, its cell walls are broken so the cells then can freely flow inside, causing it to react towards the air inside that fruit. Yes, there’s air inside apple fruits, and that it is said that these fruits are made of 20 percent air, hence why apples float!.
Now, we’ve established what is causing this phenomenon in our apples we now have to determine how it could be stopped. 1 very common method is drizzling extract of a lemon onto the cut up apples. However, this method will change its taste.
When lemon juices are mixed with water, this mixture is then called an “acidulated water” mix. Lime is okay also as a replacement for the lemons. This water plus acid mix could also work for other fruits, such as avocados, pears & peaches.
Other juices are also fine to be substituted to prevent apples from browning – orange, pineapple and apple juices are examples. Some people are even using a popular soda, Sprite. There’s also that commercialized product in the market, commonly known also as “Fruit fresh”, and just like those other juices mentioned, these liquid could also cause change the apple’s taste & flavor.
Investing on those shrink-wrap machines are also another option to prevent the apples from browning. This is commonly practiced by several supermarkets selling fruits. However, this method is a very expensive investment which will require one to purchase several shrink wraps.
So take note of all my tips and hopefully you get good results with whatever method you choose to use.
Best Tips To Grow Your Own Apple Trees
Having your own apple trees right at your backyard is one gratifying experience. Isn’t it enjoyable to have your daily source of fresh and healthy apples every day?
Besides, planting your own apple shrubs or trees offer you the privilege to choose what kind or variety you prefer to have at your convenience. Unlike when you purchase from fruit shops and groceries where you only have very limited choices.
Growing apples require careful attention because these trees only grow well in cold atmospheres yet they also need a minimum of 6 hrs of sun exposure during hot summer days. Since apples require cold environment and some sunlight, these plants are perfectly cultivated within the northern part of our Earth where cold temperature can go from 32ºF-45ºF.
You might have noticed that plant or orchard centers normally put labels on the seedlings to indicate where these trees will grow accordingly. These procedures are based on the procedures made by the US Agricultural Department.
The matured apple shrubs are relatively big so you must allocate enough space before planting. Also, you should understand that full maturity of the plant takes about one decade. Only after this period, the matured plants are capable of producing bountiful harvest.
Apple shrubs are beneficial plants in your plot because they provide shade from sunlight. However, similar to oak and maple trees, apple loses its leaves during winter time so the fallen leaves can serve as organic fertilizer in your plot. Aside from these benefits, you would harvest even more from your apple trees when you choose the proper location and cultivate it in well-prepared soil.
You should plant it in loam-type soil with 6.5 pH level with proper drainage.
The main parts of well-grown apple plants include its rootstock and scion. The former becomes the stems, flowers, leaves and fruits while rootstock identifies the plant measurement and its ability to withstand drought, diseases and pests. The normal apple shrub grows about 20 feet whereas the dwarf variety grows from 8 – 10 feet. The semi-dwarf tree grows from 10 to 15 feet but all of these varieties bear fruits of equal sizes.
Usually, when you plant apple seedlings, you should combine two flowers from different kinds to induce pollination. In order to cultivate fruit-bearing tree, buy a seedling from garden stores and ask the assistance of your seller to guide you choose the best variety.
Insects such as bees help hasten pollination so it’s advisable not to spray insecticides in the course of this season. Proper timing is also important in growing apple plants or trees. The best period to cultivate them is during November although late March is also acceptable.
When you purchase seedlings, you must avail of the ones with good and healthy roots. You should not have any problems with this because apple seedlings are often sold with exposed roots so you must sow them once you have bought them.
When you plant apple seedlings, you must prepare a plot that is sufficient to contain its roots. You should see to it that its roots are scattered so it won’t intertwine with each other. Put the soil firmly so its roots hold properly to the land but maintain the grafted portion over the ground. It’s best to hold the plant with strong post or stick once you’ve put it beneath the ground.
You should place adequate soil covering to maintain water and prevent growing of weeds. During winter season, you must add more soil within the area near the seedling in order to prevent it from the sudden changes in temperature.
After several years of cultivating, your apple plants are expected to produce fruits. In this phase, you should harvest the fruits in proper manner. You must hold the branch tightly and slowly turn the ripe apple until it detaches from its branch.
Your apple fruits are preferably consumed right after picking because it’s fresh and sweet. However, when you like to have them later, better maintain the branch attached to the ripe apple fruit. Harvest the fruits in different days so the reaped apples won’t ripe all at once.
It’s important to learn how to trim or prune apple plants because they must be cropped occasionally to maintain proper growth. When you intend to raise your apple plants or trees, you should know grafting and other horticultural skills to commence this attempt.
